MySol Grid

Mini-Grid Solution

MySol Grid (formerly ENGIE PowerCorner) was started in 2015 as an incubation project within the ENGIE Group. In March 2016, we lit up the remote village of Ketumbeine in Northern Tanzania with our first 16 kWp mini-grid unit, powering 120 homes and businesses. This groundbreaking accomplishment proved that decentralised, clean, and reliable energy is a viable solution for remote rural areas.

Since then, MySol Grid has expanded operations across Sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to bring energy access to the doorsteps of millions of people. ENGIE Energy Access, is proud to offer an integrated business model that combines mini-grids with modular solar home systems.

Our production installation which connects thousands of users through smart electricity metres can be found in homes, schools, health centres, and businesses.

Warren, a welder living in Tanzania, says that signing up to his local village’s MySol Grid has changed the future prospects of his family. He explains: “I am very pleased with the mini-grid service because it is cheaper than diesel to run my machines, and it is reliable. Since I got connected to MySol Grid, I have been able to start selling some groceries as a second business and diversify my revenues. As my income has increased, I can now pay for my two children to go to university.”

"As soon as I started to access MySol Grid electricity, I saw a number of business opportunities flowing in my mind. Because my village is facing a huge problem of water for domestic use, I decided to explore the water supply business. It has been almost 4 months since I started the business. I serve over 60 people a day and the number keeps growing. My revenues are higher than expected, it is a good business. Thank you for changing my life in this rural remote village of ours!”

Promoting Women’s Representation in Leadership Positions (Case Study)

Over the course of 2019 to 2021, MySol Grid was taking part in a study conducted by the Energy2Equal program by IFC that aims to expand women’s access to jobs, leadership positions, and entrepreneurial opportunities in corporate value chains within the renewable energy space.

During these two years, MySol Grid committed to increasing the share of women in its management positions.

      Our MySol Grid project pipeline

Our short-term pipeline of MySol Grid projects will scale through pilots to de-risk new country developments, bilateral collaborations, participation in tenders or RBF programs by 2024.

Country selection criteria depend on the existence of a sufficiently large market potential for Mini-Grids in the country, a supportive regulatory framework and the openness for private investors and the availability of subsidies.

ENGIE Equatorial: The future of distributed energy access

Developed by ENGIE Equatorial, The Lolwe mini-grid is more than an energy solution, it’s a comprehensive, multi-utility project addressing the critical needs of the Lolwe’s local population.
Beyond providing affordable, reliable, and renewable electricity, Lolwe boasts a productive hub that transforms raw materials into valuable products. This tackles fundamental needs which are often overlooked on the islands, strengthening the project’s economic viability.

Further enhancing the community’s green infrastructure, Lolwe introduces electric mobility for fishing boats and motorcycles, benefiting both the environment and the local economy.

ENGIE Equatorial is also committed to empowering local businesses. Through business incubation and asset financing services, we’re fostering entrepreneurship and driving economic growth.

The Lolwe project is a truly scalable model – matching green infrastructure and ICT innovation for delivery of real impact – the beginning of a “mini-grid 2.0” model that delivers more for investors and communities alike and is a significant milestone and benchmark for the energy access space.
