ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique Marks 230,000 Customers Milestone on 5th Anniversary, Unveils New Products

Leading PAYGo solar company transforms 1,150,000 lives with clean energy solutions.

ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique, part of ENGIE - a global reference in low-carbon energy and services - started operations in 2019. It is the only energy player in the country offering end-to-end off-grid energy solutions including solar home systems and mini-grids. ENGIE Energy Access, active in 9 Sub-Saharan African countries, won the 2022 AFSIA Award for Solar Home System Company of the Year for its MySol rebrand.

Alexandra Links, Managing Director of ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique, said: “We are delighted to announce our more than 230,000 customers in Mozambique on our 5th anniversary. We have reached these 230,000 customers faster than any other player in the sector, even though we only started five years ago. ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique has invested more than 20 million dollars to light up the lives of Mozambicans. As we celebrate this milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to a sustainable tomorrow, rural prosperity and the empowerment of communities through access to clean energy. This is a defining moment for us, and the off-grid industry, especially after overcoming numerous hurdles. We are thankful for the strong support from donors and partners. The Mozambican government’s recent legislative reviews, new energy law and upcoming fiscal incentives, all sharing the same vision of a multi-technology approach - will be critical in attracting more investment into the sector and accelerating energy access for all Mozambican families by 2030.”

ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique operates in 10 states across the country: Maputo City, Maputo Province, Gaza, Inhambane, Manica, Sofala, Tete, Zambézia, Nampula and Niassa. Links highlighted the important role that partnerships with organizations such as Vodafone M-Pesa, FUNAE, GIZ (FASER), SNV (BRILHO) and many more have played in the company’s success to date.

Alexandra Links added: We have achieved these 230,000 milestones faster than any other player in the sector, even though we started only five years ago. We have benefited from ENGIE Energy Access’s experience, strong track record in eight other Sub-Saharan African markets, as well as ENGIE’s trust and investment. We have built a strong and committed team from day one. Universal electrification is the seventh of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that the global community has committed to achieve by 2030. With Africa, and by extension Mozambique, accounting for a major part of the population still without access to electricity, we are confident in the role that ENGIE Energy Access and its MySol solar products will play in improving these statistics in Mozambique.”

Gillian Huart, CEO of ENGIE Energy Access also added: “Looking ahead to 2030, we are embarking on a new and ambitious phase of our journey. Our goal is to impact the lives of more than 50 million people in Africa. By increasing our mini-grids, solar business systems and productive use appliances, we aim to boost economic development, improve the quality of life of our customers and create job opportunities. With the continued support of our partners, customers and team, we are confident in our ability to achieve these ambitious goals and create a future where all Mozambicans have access to clean, quality, sustainable and affordable energy.”
