ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique celebrates 200,000 customer milestone on 4th anniversary and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Foundation for Community Development (FDC)

16th November 2023

ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique, one of the leaders in Mozambique’s Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGo) solar industry, has hit the milestone of electrifying 200,000 customers – impacting 1,000,000 lives – as it celebrates its four-year anniversary.

The company announced its latest achievement today at an event that was attended by local dignitaries including the Minister of Energy, the representative of Foundation for Community Development (FDC).

The event also marked the start of a strategic partnership between ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique (EEA) and the Foundation for Community Development (FDC), a non-profit civil organisation whose mission is to strengthen the capacities of communities with the aim of overcoming poverty and promoting social justice in Mozambique.

The memorandum was signed by the Managing Directors of each of the institutions, Junior Kwebiiha (EEA Mozambique) and Diogo Milagre (FDC) respectively, who share the ideal of developing actions and instruments aimed at promoting energy transition and equality, as well as gender equity in the projects.

The partnership will involve capacity-building and technical training initiatives tailored for the energy transition. It aims to transfer essential expertise to local entrepreneurs, empowering them with the skills needed to actively engage in project implementation. By doing so, they can significantly contribute to the development of local content. Notably, the agreement prioritizes encouraging the involvement of women from local communities in the co-management and operation of projects.

Junior Kwebiiha added: "For EEA Mozambique, this partnership fulfils our mission to impact communities with clean energy and empower them with comprehensive training on the benefits of solar energy, as well as knowledge and access to mobile money and financial mechanisms, to improve financial inclusion and economic empowerment in these communities. We will also, together with FDC, empower underprivileged rural communities in Mozambique, facilitating the widespread adoption of solar home systems and productive use, thus fighting poverty, and promoting social equity and community development through sustainable energy solutions."

ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique, part of ENGIE, a global reference in low-carbon energy and services, started operations in 2019. It is the only energy player in the country offering end-to-end off-grid energy solutions that include both solar home systems and mini-grids. ENGIE Energy Access, active in 9 Sub-Saharan African countries, won the 2022 AFSIA Award for Solar Home System Company of the Year for its MySol rebrand.

ENGIE Energy Access Mozambique has operations in 10 states across the country (Maputo City, Maputo Province, Gaza, Inhambane, Manica, Sofala, Tete, Zambézia, Nampula and Niassa). Kwebiiha highlighted the important role that partnerships with organizations such as Vodafone M-Pesa, FUNAE, GIZ (FASER), SNV (BRILHO) and many more have played in the company’s success to date.

Kwebiiha added: “We have been able to hit these 200,000 milestone faster than any other player in the sector, even though we arrived only four years ago. We have benefited from ENGIE Energy Access’s experience and strong track record in eight other Sub-Saharan African markets, as well as ENGIE’s trust and investment. We were very fortunate to build a strong and committed team from day one.”

Gillian-Alexandre HUART, CEO of ENGIE Energy Access commented: “As we celebrate the remarkable milestone of 200,000 customers in Mozambique, I am profoundly grateful for the trust our customers place in us. This accomplishment reaffirms our dedication to bridging energy gaps and empowering communities. Each customer served is proof of the positive impact of accessible, sustainable energy. With this milestone, we renew our commitment to continue lighting up lives and driving positive change in Mozambique and beyond.”
